Nova Gallery

Lansdown Studios & Gallery

Whilst wandering round Lewes spreading the word about the forthcoming Photo Club in the Pub Course, Andy and I popped in to Lansdown Studios & Gallery on Lansdown Road and met artist and proprietor Colin Merrin.

Now I should point out that although this is a photography site, we will occassionally feature other items of interest - particularly relating to the arts in Sussex - within our 'Around Sussex' category.

Colin's landscape painting is textural and elemental - and is similar in some respects to Andy's Sussex landscape photography.

In addition to showing Colin's work and the ceramic's of artist Sarah Burges, the gallery is available to stage exhibitions. Worth noting for any photographers looking for a place to exhibit!

Colin is planning a charity sale of some of his work in late April. We'll bring you more information nearer the time.

These days Lewes is quite an artistic hub and the Lansdown gallery is well worth a look.

New Photo Club in the Pub Courses

I hope you'll forgive the little plug, but Nova Photography (our day job) is launching two new Sussex Photography courses - one in Eridge at the Nevill Crest and Gun, and the other in Lewes at the Pelham Arms.

The Photo Club in the Pub (Level 1) courses are six month courses designed to make you look at the world differently, in a more creative way. It’s for beginners to intermediate level photographers – ideally you need to have some knowledge of how your camera works.

Photo Club is a 6 month long course. Particpants meet once a month at a local pub. It’s a chance to meet like-minded people, learn the art of photography or push your creativity further and ultimately, have fun!

The course revolves around a series of creative assignments - each month we review the each student's images from the previous month and introduce the next assignment. Students receive an information sheet with each assignment, including technical tips, ideas and examples.

The course are usually £99 for the six months, but are currently being offered at £10 discount - so just £89. Everyone who completes a course also receives a £10 voucher that can be redeamed against any Nova Photography service.

The Eridge course starts on Monday 4th April and then the first Monday of the month. The Lewes course starts on Monday 11th April and then the second monday of the month.

High & Over Exhibition

Currently at Gallery North in Hailsham is 'High & Over' an exhibition of traditional and digital photography by local professional photographers Vivienne Blakey, Liz Scott, Roger Scott, James Stephen Davis and David Mills.

The exhibition explores the local landscape of the South Downs, the Cuckmere Valley and the Sussex coastline.

Sussex photographer Vivienne Blakey shows a collection images depicting the landscape around her home on the South Downs. Often working at dawn, she repeatedly visits the same location: "One morning the land might be painted in a silver misty light and the next it will be red, the fields flooded with vermillion. Every morning is painted a different colour, a different image of the same place each day.”

The exhibition runs until March 26th.

We're a little behind with our featured shots, so despite some early signs of spring, this portrait from Ben Haywood has a distinctly snowy context.
